Smt. B. Sarojini Devi Kakkillaya No More
Smt. B. Sarojini Devi Kakkillaya, wife of renowned leader and leading light of Kannada movement Late Sri B. S. Kakkillaya passed away on April 30th late night. She was aged 94 years. She was the eldest daughter of Late Rau Bahudhur (title conferred by Maharaja of Vizianagaram) Ullal Subraya Bhat and Late Jalajakshamma.
Smt. B. Sarojini Devi came to Kasaragod from Vizianagaram in Andhra Pradesh at the age of 14 years, after her marriage to Sri BS Kakkillaya. She was one of the top most women activist, involved in the social, cultural and religious activities of Kasaragod. During her husbandís life span, and even after his demise, she was active in the movement for merger of Kasaragod with Karnataka State.
Smt. Sarijini Devi was a very talented violinist and the disciple of renowned violinist Late Dwaram Venkataswamy Naidu. She was proficient in Kannada, Thelugu, Hindi, English and Sanskrit and well-versed in literature of these languages. She was the President of Bevinje Sridhara Kakkillaya Foundation which provides financial aid to the meritorious students belonging to economically backward community.
It was due to her devoted and selfless service that Sri B. S. Kakkillaya was successful in his professional and social endeavours. Her younger brother Justice U. L. Bhat was trained and professionally groomed by Sri B. S. Kakkillaya and made name as the Chief Justice of Kerala, Gauhati and Madhya Pradesh High Courts. Her eldest daughter, Late Dr. Lalitha S N Bhat, was a popular doctor, writer, Kannada activist. She also was the President of Kerala chapter of Kannada Sahitya Parishat.
Smt. Sarojini Devi had two sons and eleven daughters. All her children are well-educated and well-employed and have earned good social status by their committed work and service to society. Smt. Sarojini Devi remained active even after the age of ninety years. She wanted to spend the last days of her life peacefully in her beloved house in Kasaragod.
